Infrastructure and Environment Meeting on Item #IE 30.7 (Single-Use and Takeaway Items – Voluntary Measures Program)

May 25, 2022
City of Toronto
Zoom and City Council Chambers

City Council voted in favour of adopting the Voluntary Measures program to provide support for small businesses, and to ensure the City is leading by example by shifting away from single-use in City operations and facilities.  This means the City will  provide promotional tools, resources and recognition for businesses across Toronto to help them voluntarily take steps to reduce single-use items.

They also voted yes on the request by Councillors Layton & Robinson for a public report on the status of the Single-Use Reduction Strategy.

Several StopPlastics volunteers deputed saying that this isn’t good enough.  We need the City to implement single use bans now.  The City started to examine ways to reduce single use items way back in 2008.  We have a plastics crisis and voluntary/upon request measures are not adequate.
