The government of Sikkim wanted to create clean and healthy urban and rural environments so they rolled out a series of laws aimed at combating the garbage and litter problems that plagued the area. One of the measures taken by the government was a ban on disposable plastic shopping bags.

Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Administration passed a law that bans plastic bags, utensils, and Styrofoam and plastic food containers. The final phase of the ban went into effect in January 2003 and one year later plastic bag use was down 69 percent. Businesses that hand out banned items face hefty fines.

Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Environment and Water on Sunday has announced a ban on the circulation and marketing of non-biodegradable plastic products by the beginning of next year. In 2003, Denmark introduced a tax to retails for giving out plastic bags. This encouraged stores to charge for plastic bags and pushed the use of reusable bags. It was thought that this saved about 66% of plastic and paper bags.[32] In 2004, a similar law was passed by the Inatsisartut in Greenland, which applied a recycling tax on plastic bags.[33] By 2014 Denmark had the lowest plastic bag use in Europe, with 4 bags per person per year, compared to 466 in Portugal, Poland and Slovakia

As of May 5, 2008 plastic bags are no longer used in Aylsham. To kick things off the County Council gave away reusable shopping bags and many stores began to carry reusable bags so shoppers have plenty of environmentally friendly alternatives.
